Percy Leonard Brown, 79, of
Newport News, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2004, after an extended illness. |
|
Leonard was born April 30,
1925, in Gates County, NC, and moved to Newport News with his family when he
was 10 months old. He graduated from Newport News High School in 1943 and later
received insurance training through Kemper Insurance Company in Chicago. He was
a member of the 242nd Infantry Regiment in World War II and was awarded the
Bronze Star and Infantry Combat Badge for service in Europe. |

Leonard was owner of Fidelity
Insurance Corporation for 23 years and retired in February 1989 after 37 years
in the property and casualty insurance business. He was a founder and past
president of the Peninsula Kiwanis Club and a past president of the Peninsula
Association of Insurance Agents. He was also active and a leader in the Hampton
Roads Jaycees in the 1950s and 60s. |

Leonard was an active member of
First Baptist Church of Newport News and sang in the sanctuary choir for many
years. During the past several years he especially enjoyed the fellowship of
the Taylor and Chambless Sunday School Class. |

Leonard was preceded in death
by his parents, Percy and Roberta Green Brown, brother Harold S. Brown, and
brother-in-law Paul N. Carrithers. He is survived by his wife of 54 years,
Helen Spivey Brown; sons Kenneth Leonard Brown and wife Marilyn of Richmond,
and Michael Cary Brown and wife Lydia of Williamsburg; grandchildren Michael
Cary Brown, II and Callie Page Brown; a brother, William N. Brown and wife
Bertha, a sister-in-law, Gladys M. Brown, and a sister, Marie B. Carrithers,
all of Newport News; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. |

Funeral services will be
conducted at First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News,
Virginia, 23602, at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 7, 2004. Officiating will be Dr.
K. Randall Everett and Dr. James White. Interment at Peninsula Memorial Park
will be private. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Room
following the services. |
In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church for the
John Leland Center for Theological Studies. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral

1925, in Gates County, N.C., and moved to Newport News as an infant. He was a
veteran of World War II and owner of Fidelity Insurance Corporation where he
retired in 1989 after 37 years in the property and casualty insurance business.
Leonard was a member of First Baptist Church of Newport News for 69 years. |

Leonard is survived by his wife
of 54 years, Helen Spivey Brown; sons, Kenneth Leonard Brown and wife Marilyn
of Richmond and Michael Cary Brown and wife Lydia of Williamsburg; two
grandchildren; and a brother and sister. |
The funeral will be held at
noon Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News.
Interment will be private at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive
friends at a reception in the church Fellowship Room following the services. In
lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church
for the John Leland Center for Theological Studies. Arrangements by Weymouth
Funeral Home Inc.
