Plan
to curb health benefits abandoned Supervisor
Chris Daly dropped a proposal Wednesday to scale back the city's retirement of
health benefits for city workers, the costs of which have tripled over the past
three years. |
|
City workers qualify for
lifetime medical insurance coverage upon retirement after working for San
Francisco for five years. Many other governments require at least 10 years of
service. |
|
Daly, who faced opposition from
unions representing city workers, hopes to revisit the issue next year. |
|
In April, The Chronicle
reported that the city's retiree health insurance costs had increased from
$23.7 million in 2001 to an anticipated $68.8 million this year and were
projected to reach $119.2 million by 2007. |
The city controller's office
estimates that retirees with less than 10 years of service cost the city
roughly $9.1 million this year.
