Tests the state did show a
45-year-old woman from the Escondido-area does not have West Nile virus, as
less-sophisticated tests initially indicated, county health officials said
today. The woman got sick about three weeks ago and went to see her doctor late
last week, where test results showed the presence of the mosquito-borne virus,
said the county's Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Bowen. But more advanced
tests by the California Department of Health Services came back negative today,
said Leslie Ridgeway of the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency. SAN
DIEGO (CNS) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of San
Diego businessman Vincent Mudd to the California Compensation Insurance Fund
board. Mudd, 40, is president and chief executive officer of San Diego Office
Interiors and acting president of the Haworth Dealer Council, Workplace
Alliance Inc. and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Diego County. The state's
Compensation Insurance Fund provides workers' compensation insurance coverage for
small- and medium-sized businesses. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man dubbed the
"Meal Time Bandit" because he committed robberies at lunch or dinner
time pleaded guilty in federal court today to five counts of bank robbery.
Steve Hansok Kang, 26, admitted to robbing five banks in San Diego County
between March 30 and April 10, taking more than $9,000 from the five banks. SAN
DIEGO (CNS) - Detectives found a National City infant today with a baby sitter
who disappeared with the 3-month-old boy over the Independence Day weekend.
Officers staking out a South San Diego transit depot frequented by Michelle
Denise Hill, 18, captured her when she arrived there to catch a trolley about
2:30 p.m. She was carrying 3-month-old Jeremiah Akaiteart, according to police.
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward today for information
leading to the arrest of an assailant who fatally shot a young man at a
National City intersection exactly a year ago. Francisco Chaires, 22, was
stopped at a red light at Eighth Street and Roosevelt Avenue about 10:30 p.m.
last July 6 when a passenger in a nearby car got out, walked over and shot him
in the head, according to police. Friends and family of the victim plan to
gather at the scene of the shooting at 8:30 tonight for an hour-long
candlelight vigil in his memory. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Adidas America expanded its
multi year-partnership with the University of San Diego to include sports other
than football, the Portland-based sporting goods company announced today. Under
the agreement, all 16 varsity sports at the university will exclusively wear
Adidas footwear, apparel and accessories. Previously, the partnership covered
only the university's football program. SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A Palomar College
student who bypassed high school graduation to take care of his ailing father
earned a perfect score on the General Education Development equivalency exam.
Zachary Olkewicz's achievement marks the first perfect score in California in
10 years, said Nancy J. Goodrich, associate analyst in the GED Office at the
California Department of Education. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four people died in
traffic accidents over the July 4th holiday weekend in the San Diego area, the
California Highway Patrol reported today. During the 78-hour period that
started at 6 p.m. Friday, officers took 126 motorists into custody on suspicion
of driving under the influence in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - No
serious injuries or deaths occurred along the 17-mile stretch from Black's
Beach to the tip of Point Loma over the July 4th holiday weekend, authorities
reported today. The three-day weekend drew an estimated 1.47 million visitors
to San Diego's ocean shorelines and harbors, and 685 of them wound up the focus
of a water rescue, lifeguard Lt. Brant Bass said.
